In our 11/16/06 MetroSIG meeting, four city managers and CIOs from the bay area presented their experience in deploying metro wide WiFi networks. There was extensive and enlightening discussion on their deployments moderated by Sarah Jane Tribble from SJ Mercury News.
New joint activity: There is a growing interest in "emergency networks" for disaster situations. We believe that these networks should be dual mode having both disaster recovery and commercial operation modes. MetroSIG will organize meetings in collaboration with eCLIC.
eCLIC SIG will serve as a center of excellence and open forum to stimulate the advancement and widespread use of Wireless Broadband Internet Protocol networks for emergency services and disaster recovery management.
The eCLIC goal is to realize a user-friendly, point and click, application-rich wireless world for emergency responders and managers. eCLIC will apply decades of field experience, focusing its efforts on three critical areas that comprise the eCLIC Success Triad:
- Visionary Leadership (Policies, Procedures)
- Technology Innovation (Hard Infrastructure)
- Skills / Applications Innovation (Soft Infrastructure)
MetroSIG is a monthly forum that features presentations from leading experts on Municipal WiFi and other wireless networks. Meetings cover business models, case studies, legal issues, financing and marketing strategies, as well as technical aspects of broadband network implementation (WISP/ISP). All attendees are encouraged to ask questions, debate the issues and engage in stimulating dialogs.
The subjects of 'What is the business model?' and 'Who pays for free service?' will remain hot topics. The MetroSIG will explore these questions by bringing the best speakers from companies and research institutes.
